Ceilidh Band in Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, West Wales
The Backroom Band plays for dancing and for listening. And for fun!
Ceilidhs combine dance and performance. Typically, Andy leads people through 2 or 3 dances, gives them a rest while the band plays a couple of tunes or a song, then gets them up on their feet for another dance or two.
He starts with simple dances that anybody can do (very simple ones if the dancers include many children) and introduces more challenging ones if and when he feels they are appropriate.
Ceilidhs are great mixers. What else gets all ages involved and meeting each other with a laugh so quickly? Some of the dances involve changing partners; nearly all are danced in sets of greater than 2 people; and Andy encourages people onto the floor even if they can’t find a partner – he’ll find one for you!
Older people may have done this kind of thing in primary school, as ‘country dancing’. Dawnsio Gwerin is still a live art in Welsh schools and community life, and the dances Andy uses draw on both these traditions.
A typical ceilidh may run from 8 till 11.30 or midnight, with a break in the middle, but we can time it to suit you. We bring the PA, so all we need is a 13amp socket and people willing to give it a go. Beer and a buffet are a bonus!
The band is also happy to play as a duo or trio in pubs and clubs, or for event and private parties.

"Just to say a huge thank you for helping to make our Burns Night on Saturday such a wonderful success! We have had fantastic feedback – many people said they had never been to a ceilidh before and they had a brilliant time! They’ve all told us to book another one for next year, so I think that says it all!" – Sandy A.
